KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kyle Isbel delivered a performance for the ages Friday night, combining a walk-off hit with two jaw-dropping defensive gems to lead the Kansas City Royals to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. It was a night that showcased everything you love about baseball: clutch hitting, spectacular defense, and a dramatic finish that had Kauffman Stadium rocking.
The Royals, winners of six of their last eight, found themselves trailing 3-1 heading into the eighth inning. That's when the magic began. Michael Massey led off with a double against reliever Kyle Finnegan, setting the stage for Isbel and Maikel Garcia to deliver back-to-back RBI singles. Isbel's hit was especially impactful—he took third base when the ball got past right fielder Wenceel Pérez for a two-base error, putting the tying run 90 feet away.
After Garcia's single knotted the game at 3-3, the stage was set for Isbel's heroics. In the ninth, pinch-hitter Nick Loftin doubled with two outs against Brant Hurter (4-1). Up stepped Isbel, who sliced an opposite-field single past the diving glove of third baseman Kevin McGonigle and into left field for his first career walk-off hit. It was the Royals' third walk-off win of the season, and it couldn't have come from a more deserving player.
But Isbel's contributions weren't limited to the batter's box. In the top of the eighth, with a runner on base, he made a diving backhand catch in left-center to rob Pérez of extra bases. Two pitches later, he tracked down Spencer Torkelson's deep drive, making an over-the-head grab just in front of the warning track to end the inning. Those two catches likely saved the game for Kansas City.
Lucas Erceg (3-1) worked a tense ninth inning, stranding two runners when Colt Keith popped out to seal the win. Detroit struggled all night with runners in scoring position, going just 2 for 11.
In a fun twist, Kansas City improved to 6-1 this season when wearing their City Connect uniforms—maybe there's something to that fresh look after all.
The Tigers had built their lead on a run-scoring double-play grounder from Torkelson in the second and a tiebreaking two-out RBI double from Pérez in the sixth. That play was controversial—shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. took Isbel's throw from left and made a strong relay to catcher Carter Jansen, only for the ball to pop out of the glove at the last moment. Torkelson later added another double against Nick Mears for a 3-1 lead.
Royals starter Kris Bubic battled through 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. Tigers starter Keider Montero was equally effective, giving up just one run on three hits over six innings.
In other news, Detroit signed right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor league contract, looking to add depth as they try to snap out of their four-game losing streak.
