There’s nothing quite like a walk-off win to get the heart racing—and Kyle Isbel delivered one for the ages Friday night at Kauffman Stadium.

The Kansas City Royals outfielder notched his first career walk-off hit, a ninth-inning single that capped a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over the Detroit Tigers. But Isbel didn’t just shine at the plate; he also made two jaw-dropping catches in the outfield that likely saved the game.

Trailing 3-1 in the eighth, the Royals sparked a rally when Michael Massey led off with a double. Isbel followed with an RBI single, and Maikel Garcia added another run-scoring knock to tie the game. Isbel alertly took third on a two-base error by right fielder Wenceel Pérez, putting the winning run 90 feet away.

In the ninth, pinch-hitter Nick Loftin doubled with two outs, setting the stage for Isbel. The 28-year-old sliced an opposite-field single past the diving glove of third baseman Kevin McGonigle, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. It was Kansas City’s third walk-off win of the season and their sixth victory in eight games.

Defensively, Isbel was nothing short of spectacular. In the eighth, he made a diving backhanded catch in left-center to rob Pérez of extra bases with a runner on. Two pitches later, he sprinted to the warning track and made an over-the-head grab to end the inning, leaving Spencer Torkelson shaking his head in disbelief.

Lucas Erceg (3-1) worked a tense ninth, stranding two runners when Colt Keith popped out. The Tigers, losers of four straight, went just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Detroit struck first in the second when Torkelson’s run-scoring double-play grounder put them ahead, but the Royals answered immediately with an RBI single from Isaac Collins. The Tigers regained the lead in the sixth on Pérez’s two-out double, aided by a tough break when catcher Carter Jansen couldn’t hold onto a strong relay from shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. Torkelson then doubled off Nick Mears to make it 3-1.

Royals starter Kris Bubic battled through 5⅔ innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. Tigers starter Keider Montero was sharp, giving up just one run and three hits over six frames.

One fun note for Royals fans: Kansas City improved to 6-1 this season when wearing their City Connect uniforms. Maybe there’s some magic in those threads.

Detroit signed right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor league contract earlier in the day, hoping to shore up their pitching depth as they look to snap out of their skid.
