The Kansas City Royals are sending a clear message to the rest of the American League Central: don't look in the rearview mirror now, because they're closer than you think. After a rocky April, the Royals have stormed through May with five straight wins, and their latest 5-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians has them sitting just half a game out of first place. This win secures at least a series split against their division rivals, and the momentum is building.
Kansas City wasted no time jumping ahead. Maikel Garcia led off the game with a walk and a confident bat flip, setting the tone. Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a line-drive double, and after a harmless popup from Vinnie Pasquantino, Salvador Perez drilled a liner to right field to score both runners. Just like that, it was 2-0 Royals, and starting pitcher Stephen Kolek—stepping in for the injured Noah Cameron (back spasm)—had all the early support he needed. The bats cooled after that, with Carter Jensen and Jac Caglianone both striking out, a pattern that would emerge throughout the night.
Kansas City nearly added to their lead in the second inning when Isaac Collins singled and Kyle Isbel walked, putting two on with one out for Garcia and Witt. But the Guardians escaped the jam, keeping the score at 2-0. That missed opportunity came back to haunt them in the fourth. Kolek had been cruising through Cleveland's lineup, but the Guardians started making hard contact. Chase DeLauter led off with a single, Royals nemesis Kyle Manzardo followed with another, and then Rhys Hoskins launched a line drive just inside the left-field foul pole for a three-run homer. Cleveland took a 3-2 lead.
But that was all the Guardians would get off Kolek, who turned in a gritty, commendable performance. Over six full innings, he didn't issue a single walk, struck out three, and limited the damage to just those three runs. It was exactly the kind of start a team needs to stay hot.
Cleveland's lead didn't last long. In the bottom of the fourth, the Royals roared back, reclaiming the momentum and never looking back. With the bats heating up and the pitching holding strong, Kansas City is proving they're a force to be reckoned with in this division race.
