The Washington Commanders may have a new option at wide receiver, and his name is Stefon Diggs. While much of the fan base has been buzzing about Brandon Aiyuk, the reality is that Aiyuk hasn't played a down since Week 7 of the 2024 season. With Washington GM Adam Peters unable to even discuss players under contract with other teams, the Aiyuk rumors remain just that—rumors.
Enter Stefon Diggs, a local legend who starred at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney, Maryland, before becoming a Maryland Terrapin. Now an unrestricted free agent, Diggs brings a combination of durability and production that's hard to ignore. Last season, he suited up for all 17 games with the AFC Champion New England Patriots, hauling in 85 receptions. Over the past five seasons, he's missed just one game total, proving he's still a reliable target.
Diggs' resume speaks for itself. In 2020, he led the NFL in both receptions (127) and receiving yards (1,535) during his time with the Bills. Paired with Kirk Cousins in Minnesota back in 2019, he averaged an eye-popping 17.9 yards per catch. That kind of big-play ability doesn't just disappear.
Of course, there are questions. Diggs will turn 33 this November, and he's already played for four teams: the Vikings, Bills, Texans, and most recently the Patriots. Why have both Houston and New England let him walk? That's the million-dollar question. But for a Commanders team looking to add firepower, a proven, productive receiver who's still playing at a high level might be worth a closer look. Whether it's Aiyuk or Diggs, Washington's receiver room could use a veteran presence.
