Is embattled QB Brendan Sorsby the answer for the Browns in NFL supplemental draft?

Todd McShay, draft analyst for The Ringer, believes Brendan Sorsby could be an option at quarterback for several NFL teams, including the Browns.

The Cleveland Browns have never shied away from taking a chance on a quarterback with a complicated story, and it looks like they might have another opportunity to roll the dice. This time, the name is Brendan Sorsby, a talented but embattled signal-caller who could be available in the NFL's supplemental draft. According to The Ringer's draft analyst Todd McShay, Sorsby might just be the answer for a team like the Browns—but it comes with plenty of risk.

Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 235 pounds, Sorsby has the physical tools that scouts love. Over his four-year college career split between Indiana and Cincinnati, he completed 594 of 968 passes (61.4%), tossing 60 touchdowns against just 18 interceptions. Those numbers suggest a player with first-round potential, and McShay agrees, calling him a "first-round talent with an ideal quarterback profile." But here's where it gets complicated: Sorsby is currently fighting an eligibility battle with the NCAA after transferring to Texas Tech for an NIL deal. Reports have also surfaced about a gambling issue, including an allegation that he bet on his own team while at Indiana—though he didn't play in that game.

If the NCAA doesn't rule in his favor quickly, Sorsby could enter the supplemental draft, where a team would have to surrender its 2027 first-round pick to select him. McShay believes three teams should consider taking that gamble: the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets. Of course, the Browns have a history of taking on quarterbacks with baggage. Remember Bernie Kosar? He manipulated draft rules in 1985 to land with his hometown team, and he remains the last consistently successful quarterback in Cleveland—until he was cut by Bill Belichick for "diminished skills" in 1993. That move actually led the league to change its draft rules.

McShay emphasizes that any team drafting Sorsby would need a strong support system in place—coaching, legal help, and psychological resources—to help the young quarterback stay on track. For the Browns, who have seen their share of quarterback drama over the years, adding Sorsby could be either a brilliant move or another chapter in a long, frustrating story. Either way, it's a name worth watching as the supplemental draft approaches.
