In a clash of NIC-10 softball titans, the Hononegah Indians have seized the top spot—at least for now—by edging past the Belvidere North Blue Thunder with a hard-fought 2-0 victory on Monday afternoon in Rockton.
The hero of the day? Junior pitcher Irelyn O’Brien, who delivered a masterclass on the mound. Over seven dominant innings, O’Brien allowed just three hits while striking out ten batters, keeping Belvidere North’s lineup off balance all game. But her impact didn’t stop there—she also contributed at the plate, singling and later scoring the game’s first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a well-executed sacrifice fly by Addison Hulburt.
Hononegah added an insurance run in the fifth when second baseman Megan Kelly lined a single to center field, bringing home Kennedy Smith. That was all the support O’Brien would need.
Belvidere North’s starter, Ava Morris, pitched a solid six innings, surrendering six hits and two runs while striking out four, but the Blue Thunder offense couldn’t find a way to break through.
With the win, Hononegah improves to 15-1 in conference play, while Belvidere North drops to 14-2. But the NIC-10 title race is far from over. The Indians still have tough tests ahead this week against third-place Harlem and a Guilford squad that handed them their only conference loss earlier this season. Meanwhile, Belvidere North will look to bounce back against Auburn and Belvidere.
For fans of high-stakes high school softball, this is a championship chase that promises plenty more drama. Stay tuned.
