Iran winger Ali Gholizadeh will miss the World Cup in north America after suffering a serious knee injury playing in the Polish league, his club Lech Poznan said late Monday. The 30-year-old Gholizadeh played in all three of Iran’s games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and in both of the squad’s warmup games in March in Turkey. Iran is preparing to go to the United States in June to start the World Cup in a group with New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.

Iran's World Cup preparations have suffered a significant blow with the news that winger Ali Gholizadeh will miss the tournament in North America due to a serious knee injury. The 30-year-old, who plays for Polish club Lech Poznan, tore his ACL during a 1-0 victory over Motor Lublin on Saturday—a match that saw his team maintain its lead at the top of the table.

The timing couldn't be more cruel. Just days after being named the Polish league's Player of the Month for April, Gholizadeh now faces surgery followed by months of rehabilitation. His absence leaves a noticeable gap in Iran's attacking options, especially given his experience on the biggest stage. Gholizadeh featured in all three of Iran's games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, bringing both pace and creativity to the squad.

Iran is set to begin its World Cup journey in June, opening against New Zealand in Inglewood, California, before facing Belgium and Egypt. The group stage concludes in Seattle, and a second-place finish could set up a Round of 32 clash with the United States. The team will be based in Tucson, Arizona, for pre-tournament training.

Gholizadeh is one of several Iran internationals plying their trade in Europe who have continued playing since the onset of military actions on February 28. Meanwhile, Iran's domestic league remains suspended, with home-based players training in Tehran. Reports indicate they will travel to Turkey next week for an extended pre-tournament camp.

FIFA has invited Iranian soccer officials, including federation president Mehdi Taj, to meetings in Zurich to discuss the team's World Cup logistics. With travel and training schedules now under scrutiny, Iran will need to regroup quickly as they aim to make an impact in a challenging group.
