Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav credited Mumbai Indians’s belief and character after their six-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring IPL 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.

In a high-octane IPL 2026 clash at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians proved once again that belief can move mountains—or in this case, chase down a daunting 229-run target. Stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav, leading the side while regular captain Hardik Pandya recovered from illness, couldn't hide his pride after his team's emphatic six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants.

"To be very frank, we've been in this situation a lot of times this season. It was nothing new," Suryakumar said with a calm confidence that belied the pressure. "But I knew, T20 cricket after the powerplay from overs 7 to 10—that's the sweet spot where you can turn the game on its head. We knew two wickets here and there, and we could take control."

And that's exactly what happened. LSG had stormed out of the gates, powered by explosive knocks from Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh, leaving MI's bowlers scrambling. Yet, the Mumbai attack showed remarkable composure, pulling things back from what looked like a runaway match.

"I think around overs 8-9, they were 110 or 120 for 1 or 2. I don't really remember the exact numbers," Suryakumar reflected. "But then, to pull it back to 162 for 5 in 16 overs—that performance was unbelievable. The way all the bowlers responded, they showed a lot of character."

With the chase set at 229, Mumbai needed something special—and they got it in style. The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton delivered a masterclass, stitching together a 143-run partnership that set the tone for the entire innings. "Ryan Rickelton has been batting beautifully," Suryakumar praised. "And our very own Rohit Sharma coming back into the side, fit, ready, raring to go—the way he entertained the crowd was unbelievable."

Reflecting on the foundation laid by the openers, the stand-in captain added: "It's always important to have a good start when you're chasing 220-225. The way they batted together, it looked like they were always in control." Mumbai Indians eventually sealed the win in just 18.4 overs, a statement victory that underscores their never-say-die attitude in this IPL season.
