IPL 2026: ‘We are keeping it simple’- Ruturaj Gaikwad eyes playoff push after big win vs MI

Ruturaj Gaikwad led Chennai Super Kings to a crucial eight-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians, keeping their playoff hopes alive. His unbeaten 67, coupled with Anshul Kamboj's three-wicket haul, was pivotal. Gaikwad praised the team's resilience and the bowlers' ability to regain control. The win underscores CSK's determined approach to the tournament's business end.

Ruturaj Gaikwad kept it simple and Chennai Super Kings kept their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians. The CSK captain's unbeaten 67, combined with Anshul Kamboj's three-wicket haul, proved decisive in a match that showcased the team's resilience at the business end of the tournament.

Named Player of the Match, Gaikwad praised the team's ability to regain control after Mumbai Indians threatened to run away with the game. MI had raced to 57 for 1 in the powerplay, but CSK's bowlers, led by Noor Ahmad (2/26) and Kamboj (3/32), tightened the screws through the middle overs. "We started really well, first couple of overs, they got momentum after that and we pulled it back," Gaikwad said, highlighting the bowlers' response under pressure.

The captain was particularly impressed with Kamboj's approach, noting, "He is someone who is keeping it really simple, sticking to the process and his mind is thinking like a batter's mind." Gaikwad also acknowledged Noor's growth, adding that the spinner "has made some adjustments and come along really well."

Chasing 160, CSK faced an early setback when Sanju Samson fell to Jasprit Bumrah. But Gaikwad emphasized the importance of one of the top three batting deep. "It was about getting through the first couple of overs and then it was about one of the top three staying there," he explained.

The captain anchored the innings alongside Kartik Sharma, who impressed with an unbeaten 54. Gaikwad praised the youngster's versatility: "Good confidence booster for him and us as well. Yes, he is a six-hitter but he has the other game as well, but he picks and chooses particular deliveries."

Gaikwad also shed light on CSK's team selection strategy, explaining the balance they sought by opting for all-round options. "We thought about how to get the balance right, how to get a batter at eight and the extra bowler. Veer and Ghosh are someone who can contribute with both," he said.

Reflecting on his own form, Gaikwad remained composed. "As I always say, I was feeling well, feeling confident, but it is T20 cricket. I have been in a good frame of mind and it was only a matter of time."

With this crucial win, CSK have shown they are determined to make a strong push for the playoffs, keeping their approach simple and their focus sharp as the tournament reaches its climax.
