IPL 2026: Urvil Patel, Jamie Overton star as CSK beat LSG by 5 wickets

Urvil Patel's explosive 23-ball 65, including a joint-record 13-ball fifty, powered Chennai Super Kings to their first 180-plus chase at Chepauk since 2018. His breathtaking innings, dedicated to his father, broke the back of Lucknow Super Giants' 204-run target. Shivam Dube's late sixes sealed a five-wicket victory for CSK.

In a stunning display of power-hitting, the Chennai Super Kings finally broke an eight-year drought at Chepauk, chasing down a 204-run target against the Lucknow Super Giants with five wickets in hand. The hero of the night? An unexpected name: Urvil Patel.

Stepping in for the injured Ayush Mhatre, the 27-year-old Patel delivered a breathtaking 23-ball 65 that left the Chepauk crowd in absolute awe. His 13-ball half-century tied Yashasvi Jaiswal's record for the fastest in IPL history, and it completely dismantled LSG's bowling attack. Batting at No. 3 after Sanju Samson's brisk 28 off 14, Patel turned the game on its head with a blistering assault that saw CSK race to half the target inside just seven overs.

The carnage started quietly, then erupted in spectacular fashion. Avesh Khan's over disappeared for 25 runs as Patel smashed three sixes, instantly shifting the momentum. Digvesh Rathi suffered the same fate in the next over, conceding 25 as Patel surged to 42 off just 10 balls. With the stadium roaring, he took on Mohammed Shami, bringing up his fifty with a towering six. Then, in a touching moment, he pulled a note from his pocket that read: "This is for you, Papa."

Patel's approach was simple but devastatingly effective. Seven of his eight sixes sailed over the midwicket boundary, relying on raw timing and brute power rather than fancy innovation. Shahbaz Ahmed eventually dismissed him, and a dropped catch on 62 briefly extended the onslaught, but the damage was already done.

CSK still wobbled slightly—78 runs off 64 balls should have been routine—but Shivam Dube's late sixes sealed the five-wicket victory. The win, CSK's third straight, lifted them to fifth place with 12 points from 11 matches, though a significant net run rate boost narrowly eluded them.

Earlier in the evening, Josh Inglis had lit up Chepauk with a blistering 85 off 33 balls, propelling LSG to a record powerplay score of 91/1. But CSK hit back through Jamie Overton and Noor Ahmad, who tightened the screws in the middle overs, setting the stage for Patel's unforgettable heroics.
