IPL 2026: Rickelton–Rohit duo the lone bright spot in Mumbai Indians’ fading campaign

Ryan Rickelton has emerged as Mumbai Indians' standout performer in IPL 2026, leading the team in runs with an impressive strike rate. His explosive batting, including multiple century partnerships with Rohit Sharma, has been crucial to MI's successful chases. Rickelton credits his chemistry with Sharma and the Wankhede pitch for his dream run.

The Mumbai Indians' IPL 2026 campaign may be fading, but one bright spark has emerged from the gloom: Ryan Rickelton. The South African opener has been nothing short of sensational, emerging as the team's leading run-scorer in a season where many of MI's superstars have struggled to find their rhythm.

Rickelton's numbers tell a compelling story. With 380 runs in eight matches at a blistering strike rate of 190.95—the second-best among all batters with 300-plus runs—he has been the driving force behind MI's batting lineup. His dream run started with a stunning 43-ball 81, featuring eight sixes, as MI pulled off their biggest-ever IPL chase and broke their long-standing opening-match jinx. He followed that with a breathtaking 123 not out off 51 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and then smashed 83 off 32 balls against Lucknow Super Giants to help MI chase down 229—now their highest successful chase—with ease.

The secret to Rickelton's success? A lethal partnership with Rohit Sharma. The duo has forged three century opening stands this season, including two massive partnerships: 148 in 71 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders and 143 in just 65 balls against LSG. Rickelton credits their chemistry for the magic. "Rohit is just really good—that's the chemistry right there," he said. "We complement each other well as a left-right pair. Sometimes he gets going quickly and takes pressure off me; sometimes it's the other way around."

Rickelton also revealed that he has been picking Rohit's brain for insights. "I've picked his brain a bit—not just about T20s, but Tests and ODIs too," he said. "Watching him bat in full flow is a treat—he plays shots I can only dream of." While MI's campaign may be on the rocks, the Rickelton-Rohit show is a reminder of the firepower that still burns bright at Wankhede.
