IPL 2026 | Reality check for SRH: Strong start goes in vain as KKR cruise to third win on the trot

Sunrisers Hyderabad suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders, with their spin duo Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine dismantling the SRH batting lineup. Despite a strong start, SRH collapsed to 165, a total KKR comfortably chased down thanks to half-centuries from Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

In what felt like a tale of two halves, Sunrisers Hyderabad's dream run hit a sudden speed bump as Kolkata Knight Riders cruised to a comfortable seven-wicket victory in Hyderabad. The match served as a stark reality check for the league leaders, who had been riding high on five consecutive wins.

SRH skipper Pat Cummins almost predicted the outcome at the toss, noting that winning every game for the rest of the season was "very unlikely." And while the coin flip went his way, little else did on a sweltering afternoon at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

The hosts started like a house on fire, racing to 71/1 in the powerplay — matching KKR's identical start later in the innings. Travis Head was in devastating form, smashing 61 off just 28 balls, including nine boundaries and three sixes. Alongside Ishan Kishan (42 off 29), the duo put on a 61-run partnership for the second wicket that had the home crowd in full voice.

But then came the spin twist. Varun Chakravarthy, returning as an impact player, turned the game on its head. After conceding 29 runs in his first two overs, the KKR spinner came back with a venomous second spell of 2-0-7-2, dismissing Head and triggering a dramatic collapse. The Sunrisers lost eight wickets for just 58 runs between overs 11 and 19, folding for a below-par 165.

The spin duo of Chakravarthy (3/36) and Sunil Narine (2/31) proved too hot to handle, exposing a fragile SRH middle order that relies heavily on Heinrich Klaasen. The South African star fell to a stunning one-handed catch by Rovman Powell at midwicket after smashing Cameron Green for 10 runs off the previous two deliveries. With Nitish Reddy unavailable, the lower order lacked the firepower to post a competitive total.

KKR's chase was clinical. Half-centuries from Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi guided the visitors to 169/3, bucking a trend where the team batting first had won the last three encounters between these sides by massive margins of 80, 110, and 65 runs.

For SRH fans, this defeat is a timely reminder that even the strongest starts need solid foundations. As the tournament heats up, teams will be looking to exploit any chinks in the armor — and for Hyderabad, the middle-order fragility is now firmly in the spotlight.
