IPL 2026: RCB coach Andy Flower fined after heated outburst during dramatic win over MI

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's thrilling win over Mumbai Indians was marred by a setback as head coach Andy Flower was fined for using audible obscenity during a tense moment. The incident occurred during a controversial boundary call, leading to a heated exchange. Despite this, RCB secured a crucial victory, while Mumbai Indians were eliminated from the playoff race.

In a match that had everything—drama, tension, and a last-ball thriller—the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured a stunning two-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday. But the win came with a costly sideline story, as head coach Andy Flower was fined for a heated outburst that stole headlines almost as much as the on-field action.

The IPL confirmed that Flower was docked 15 percent of his match fee for a Level 1 breach of the Code of Conduct, specifically for using an audible obscenity during the match. The incident unfolded in the 17.2 over of RCB’s chase, when a controversial boundary call sparked frustration from the former Zimbabwe captain.

Here’s what happened: Afghanistan spinner AM Ghazanfar bowled to Krunal Pandya, who lofted the ball toward wide long-on. MI fielder Naman Dhir made an acrobatic relay effort near the boundary, parrying the ball to Tilak Varma. But confusion reigned as Tilak signaled a six, apparently believing Dhir had touched the boundary cushions. Replays, however, showed Dhir avoided contact with the ropes. Since Krunal—visibly cramping—didn’t attempt a run, the delivery was ruled a dot ball.

Flower, visibly frustrated by the muddled decision, exchanged sharp words with the fourth umpire. He later accepted the sanction from match referee Amit Sharma, with the IPL noting the offense covers "offensive, obscene, and/or profane language audible to spectators or the viewing public."

Despite the off-field drama, RCB held their nerve in a chaotic final over, climbing to the top of the points table and boosting their hopes of a top-two finish. For Mumbai Indians, the loss was a crushing blow—eliminating them from playoff contention in what has been a disappointing campaign.

For fans and players alike, it was a reminder that in the heat of IPL cricket, emotions can run as high as the stakes.
