IPL 2026: Rachin Ravindra leaves KKR midway, returns home for New Zealand duty

New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra has departed the Kolkata Knight Riders midway through the IPL 2026 season. He returns home to commence preparations for his national side's upcoming three-match Test series against England. Ravindra was acquired by KKR for his base price but did not feature in any matches this season.

In a move that underscores the relentless demands of international cricket, New Zealand's rising star Rachin Ravindra has bid farewell to the Kolkata Knight Riders midway through the IPL 2026 season. The talented batter is heading home to begin preparations for the Black Caps' crucial three-match Test series against England, which kicks off on June 4.

KKR officially confirmed the departure on Friday, releasing a statement that read: "Rachin Ravindra has returned home to begin his red-ball preparations for New Zealand's upcoming Test tour to England." The franchise also shared a touching farewell video on Instagram, capturing moments of Ravindra exchanging warm hugs and handshakes with his teammates before heading to the airport. "Best wishes from the Knights as Rachin heads home to prepare for national duty," the post read.

Ravindra's IPL 2026 journey was a quiet one, to say the least. Acquired by KKR for his base price of ₹2 crore at the auction—after being released by the Chennai Super Kings—the New Zealand all-rounder was expected to add firepower to the middle order. However, with the team opting for Cameron Green in that role, Ravindra found himself warming the bench throughout the season, unable to log a single appearance in the purple and gold.

His departure adds another chapter to what has been a rollercoaster campaign for the three-time champions. KKR's season started in nightmare fashion, losing their first six matches without a single win. Just when hope seemed lost, they staged a remarkable revival, stringing together four consecutive victories to climb back into contention. But their momentum was halted in their last outing, a defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Currently sitting eighth in the points table with nine points from 11 matches, Ajinkya Rahane's side is walking a tightrope. Every remaining game is a must-win, and even then, their playoff hopes will hinge on a favorable net run rate. For Ravindra, the focus now shifts to red-ball cricket—a stage where he has already shown glimpses of his immense potential. For KKR, the challenge is to keep their season alive without him.
