In a major blow for Mumbai Indians, star allrounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of Sunday's blockbuster IPL 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The high-stakes encounter, set to take place at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, will see Suryakumar Yadav continue as captain in Pandya's absence.
Pandya, who also missed MI's previous game against Lucknow Super Giants due to a back spasm, is still being evaluated by the medical team. "Hardik continues to be evaluated by the medical team and then they will inform us on his progress," Mumbai Indians announced during the pre-match press conference. "The second one is Surya's coming in tomorrow (vs RCB)."
For RCB, this match marks their first of two at their new home venue, but they arrive nursing wounds from a narrow nine-run defeat against Lucknow Super Giants. That loss extended their losing streak to two matches, though they still sit third on the points table thanks to a superior net run rate. However, another defeat could put their top-four spot under serious pressure, with several teams breathing down their necks in the tightly packed standings.
Meanwhile, the five-time champions Mumbai Indians enter this clash with renewed confidence after registering their third win of the season—a six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring thriller. But at ninth place with just six points from 10 matches, MI face a virtual must-win situation. Another defeat could make them the first team eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoff race.
RCB will be banking on their star-studded lineup featuring Rajat Patidar (captain), Virat Kohli, Tim David, and Josh Hazlewood, while MI will look to Suryakumar Yadav's leadership and batting firepower to keep their playoff hopes alive.
