IPL 2026: Injured Ayush Mhatre likely to be out of action for two months

Mumbai and Chennai Super Kings batter Ayush Mhatre is likely to be out of action for the next couple of months due to a hamstring injury as well as a wrist injury, TOI has learnt.

In a significant blow to both Mumbai cricket and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), young batting sensation Ayush Mhatre is set to miss up to two months of action due to a combination of hamstring and wrist injuries. The 18-year-old, who had been making waves in IPL 2026, will now sit out the upcoming T20 Mumbai League, where he was retained by Triumph Knights alongside India's T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav.

Mhatre's setback began during CSK's clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18, when he suffered a left hamstring strain while batting. Further medical evaluations revealed an additional wrist issue, compounding the recovery timeline. "Ayush not only has a left hamstring injury but has also been diagnosed with a wrist injury. He is now likely to be out of action for a couple of months," a source tracking developments confirmed.

CSK had already announced Mhatre's absence from the remainder of IPL 2026, with the franchise stating, "Ayush's injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks. We wish Ayush a speedy recovery." The news comes as a major disappointment for CSK, where Mhatre had been in scintillating form, amassing 201 runs in six innings at an impressive strike rate of 177.87.

CSK batting coach Mike Hussey did not hide his concern, saying, "It looks pretty bad, unfortunately. He's going to be a big, big loss because he's been in really nice touch for us." As the young batter begins his recovery, fans and teammates alike will be hoping for a swift return to the crease.
