The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 playoffs are set for a major shakeup, with the final moving out of Bengaluru and heading to Ahmedabad's iconic Narendra Modi Stadium. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium, still reeling from a 10-month closure following a June 2025 stampede, has lost its hosting rights for the season's biggest matches—a decision that has sent ripples through the cricketing world.
The May 31 title clash will now be played in Ahmedabad, while the Eliminator and one Qualifier will take place at the New Chandigarh Stadium in Mullanpur. The HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala has been chosen to host the other Qualifier, giving these venues a chance to shine on the big stage.
While shifting the final to the home ground of the defending champions (in this case, Royal Challengers Bengaluru) might have been expected, what's raising eyebrows is Bengaluru being left out entirely from hosting any of the four playoff matches—including the Qualifiers or Eliminator. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained that the change was due to "certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI's established guidelines and protocols."
Sources suggest that a key sticking point was the demand from Karnataka state legislators for around 900 complimentary passes per match. Combined with over 4,000 passes already allocated to members and affiliates, this created a logistical challenge, eating up nearly 15% of the stadium's 33,000-seat capacity. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar dismissed this link, instead citing Ahmedabad's larger capacity as the driving factor.
For fans and players alike, this reshuffle adds fresh excitement to the playoff race. Mullanpur and Dharamshala, known for their passionate crowds and scenic backdrops, will now host high-stakes knockout games. As the IPL continues to evolve, these venue changes remind us that cricket's biggest drama can unfold anywhere—and it's always worth watching.
