IPL 2026 | 'Won't beat around the bush': Shreyas Iyer fumes after Punjab Kings' defeat to Delhi Capitals

Punjab Kings suffered their fourth straight IPL 2026 loss, falling by three wickets to Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala. Despite a strong 210/5, their bowling and fielding faltered, allowing DC to chase the target with aggressive half-centuries. Captain Shreyas Iyer expressed disappointment, highlighting execution lapses as the key issues.

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer didn't hold back after his team's fourth straight loss in IPL 2026, a heartbreaking three-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala. The frustration was written all over his face during the post-match presentation.

It was a game that promised so much for Punjab. Batting first, they posted a formidable 210/5, powered by Priyansh Arya's explosive 56 off just 33 balls, including six towering sixes. But Delhi Capitals had other plans. David Miller (51 off 28) and captain Axar Patel (56 off 30) launched a furious counterattack, chasing down the target in just 19 overs—the highest successful chase at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.

"I won't beat around the bush," Iyer said bluntly when asked where it went wrong. "I'll just say fielding and bowling again." The captain believed 210 was actually 30 runs too few on a pitch offering seam movement and variable bounce. "Absolutely, I feel that it was 30 runs more on this wicket," he added.

When questioned about not bowling spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, Iyer explained his thinking: "There was absolutely a thought in my mind, but the way the ball was seaming and helping the seamers, I think if we had executed our line and length precisely, we could have extracted wickets. Unfortunately again, we didn't."

Iyer also broke down the ideal bowling strategy for the Dharamsala surface: "Still into the surface. The hard length—short of a hard length—is the best ball, especially when a new batsman is coming in. It's not easy to hit because if you keep repeating those balls, at least one gives a chance of a mis-hit and you can get a wicket. We've been short of planning."

The win lifts Delhi Capitals to seventh place in the IPL 2026 standings after 12 matches, while Punjab Kings remain stuck in a painful losing streak that's derailed their promising start to the season.
