Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad pinpointed a critical middle-overs slowdown as the reason for his team's 10-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026. Despite a promising position in the chase, CSK lost crucial momentum at a pivotal moment.
Gaikwad revealed that after SRH's explosive powerplay, he had braced for a target north of 220. Restricting the Sunrisers to 194/9 felt like a significant victory for the bowling unit. "Looking at how their power play went, I was looking at a score around 220-230. To pull it back by 30 runs, I would have taken it any day," the skipper said.
However, the chase unraveled shortly after the halfway mark. Needing a manageable 80 runs from the final 10 overs, CSK managed a mere four runs in the next two overs, allowing pressure to mount dramatically. "From there, it was just about building a couple of partnerships," Gaikwad rued. "Chasing 12-13 at the death is going to be difficult."
SRH's total was built on rapid half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen, but CSK's bowlers, led by the impressive Anshul Kamboj, fought back admirably. In reply, starts from Ayush Mhatre, Matthew Short, and Sarfaraz Khan failed to convert into match-winning partnerships as SRH's death bowlers, including Eshan Malinga and Nitish Kumar Reddy, seized control.
Looking for positives, Gaikwad heaped praise on his bowling attack, which has delivered consistent performances. He reserved special mention for young pacer Anshul Kamboj's composure and clarity under pressure. "Very rarely you get bowlers who have clarity and tell the captain that I know what to do," Gaikwad noted, highlighting the confidence that defines top performers in the high-stakes IPL environment.
