In a moment 15 years in the making, Mumbai Indians' Raghu Sharma celebrated his maiden IPL wicket with a note that spoke volumes about his journey. Playing just his second match for MI against Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, the 33-year-old dismissed debutant Akshat Raghuwanshi for 11 and immediately pulled a heartfelt message from his pocket.
The note read: "Radhe Radhe. A very painful 15 years, by divine mercy of Gurudeva, ended today. Thanks, Mumbai Indians (Blue and Gold), for giving me this opportunity. Ever grateful. Jai Shri Ram."
After MI secured a six-wicket victory, an emotional Raghu opened up about the significance of the moment. "It's a dream come true," he told IPLT20.com. "First of all, I just want to thank my Gurudev, my spiritual guru Shri Shyam Das, and my mother and father for supporting me. I decided that if I took a wicket, I would put that note out."
The journey to this point has been anything but conventional. Coming from a family of engineers and doctors, Raghu is an electrical engineering graduate who only began taking cricket seriously after turning 18. What sparked the change? MS Dhoni's iconic World Cup-winning six in the 2011 final against Sri Lanka.
"I will just speak about how I was in 2011," Raghu said. "We have a family background where everyone is an engineer or a doctor. I am also an electrical engineer. But I decided to pursue cricket."
Drafted into the MI setup last season as an injury replacement for Vignesh Puthur and retained this year, Raghu's perseverance has finally paid off. "It has been a painful 15 years for me - how I started cricket and a lot of things happened in my life," he reflected. "But today, just by the grace of God and MI's grace, I am very grateful to this franchise. They have supported me, believed in me, and backed me. They retained me, and now I am giving them the confidence that I can do this for them."
