College basketball season is still months away, but a brewing legal showdown between the Big Ten, Fox Sports, and Amazon is already making headlines. At the center of it all? A highly anticipated neutral-site game between Duke and Michigan at Madison Square Garden this December.

Here's what you need to know: Duke and Amazon recently announced a groundbreaking three-game deal that will stream Blue Devils men's basketball exclusively on Prime Video. Two of those games—against UConn in Las Vegas and Gonzaga in Detroit—are straightforward, as they fall outside existing media rights territories. But the third game, Duke vs. Michigan at the iconic Garden, has sparked a heated dispute.

The conflict stems from a prior agreement between the ACC and Big Ten, along with their respective broadcast partners ESPN and Fox Sports. Under this arrangement, the networks alternate rights to neutral-site games in shared markets like New York. Two seasons ago, Fox aired a Duke-Illinois game at MSG. Last year, when Duke faced Michigan in Washington, D.C., ESPN got the call. Now, Fox believes it's their turn again—and they're not backing down.

But Duke already has a deal with Amazon, and the ACC has reportedly given its blessing after the school agreed to participate in future neutral-site non-conference games on ESPN. That's where things get messy. The Big Ten and Fox are now asserting ownership over the Dec. 21 matchup, arguing that the rotation agreement supersedes any new arrangements.

One intellectual property lawyer isn't buying it. David McKenzie, an IP expert, called the Big Ten's claim a "fantasy theory," suggesting the conference may be overreaching. "This isn't about protecting rights—it's about posturing," he said. "The idea that a prior handshake deal between networks can block a team from selling its own game is legally shaky at best."

For fans, the drama adds another layer of intrigue to what was already a must-watch matchup. Duke and Michigan are storied programs with passionate followings, and Madison Square Garden is the perfect stage for a December showdown. Whether it ends up on Prime Video, Fox, or somewhere else, one thing is certain: this game will be worth watching.
