Iowa women's basketball is going global, and the Hawkeyes' latest addition is proof that their recruiting reach now extends across the Atlantic. The program has secured a commitment from Swedish forward Ella Stromdahl, a source confirmed to the Des Moines Register—marking a major step in assistant coach LaSondra Barrett's push to expand Iowa's talent pipeline internationally.
Stromdahl, who turns 19 in August, stands 6 feet tall and hails from Uppsala, Sweden. She'll join the Hawkeyes as a freshman, bringing a versatile skill set that's already turning heads. Limited game footage shows an agile, fluid player with a solid wingspan, capable of scoring with either hand and knocking down shots from beyond the arc. She's the second member of Iowa's 2026-27 freshman class, alongside highly touted Californian McKenna Woliczko.
Her international experience is impressive. Stromdahl has suited up for Sweden's U16 and U18 national teams, and last season she averaged 6.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while playing for the RIG Lulea Swedish academy team. That kind of inside-outside versatility fits perfectly with head coach Jan Jensen's evolving game plan. Jensen recently told the Register that Iowa is transitioning back to a "four-out" offense—a system that relies on four perimeter players to stretch the floor and create space. Stromdahl's ability to score both inside and from deep makes her a natural fit for that scheme.
Stromdahl visited Iowa on May 12 and committed alongside Knox College transfer Bria Medina, creating a tandem that should add depth and energy to the Hawkeyes' roster. She's the fifth offseason pickup for Iowa this cycle, joining Georgia guards Dani Carnegie and Jocelyn Faison, Oklahoma State wing Amari Whiting, and Medina. With Stromdahl on board, the Hawkeyes now have 11 known players for the 2026-27 season—and Jensen has indicated she's comfortable with that number, suggesting the roster is likely set for the coming year.
For Hawkeyes fans, this international addition signals a new chapter. Iowa isn't just reloading—they're expanding their horizons, and Stromdahl could be the kind of versatile forward who helps the team thrive in Jensen's revamped offense. Keep an eye on this Swedish standout as she brings her game to the Big Ten.
