The Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball program is adding some serious firepower to its backcourt. After announcing her commitment earlier this spring, senior guard Bria Medina has officially signed with the team, bringing a proven scoring touch to Iowa City.
Standing at 5-foot-6, the Tucson, Arizona native is coming off a standout junior season at Knox College in Illinois, where she averaged an eye-popping 23.6 points per game—the second-highest mark in all of Division III women's basketball. But Medina's game isn't just about scoring. She also contributed 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.7 steals per game for the Prairie Fire, showcasing her all-around ability on the court.
Her individual accolades are equally impressive. Medina made history at Knox College by becoming the first player ever named to the NCAA DIII Region 9 First Team, while also earning Midwest Conference Player of the Year honors. It's the kind of recognition that signals a player ready for the next level.
Head coach Jan Jensen couldn't hide her excitement about the new addition. "We are so excited to add Bria to our program," Jensen said. "Her energy and gratitude to be a part of our family is the coolest part about her. She had a great deal of scoring success at Knox College and has an immense amount of appreciation for our sport. Her mindset and work ethic is what set her apart for us as we went through the process."
Medina joins a talented transfer portal class that includes guards Dani Carnegie, Jocelyn Faison, and Amari Whiting. All four will compete for minutes alongside returning guards Chit-Chat Wright and Taylor Stremlow, giving the Hawkeyes plenty of depth and versatility in the backcourt for the upcoming season.
