Iowa football tight end Ostrenga suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury against Iowa State on Sept. 6. Learn how his recovery is going.

Iowa Hawkeyes tight end Addison Ostrenga is on track for a full return to the gridiron, with head coach Kirk Ferentz delivering an encouraging update at a recent Polk County I-Club event. Ferentz confirmed that Ostrenga is expected to be fully cleared by June, marking a significant milestone in his recovery from a season-ending Achilles tendon injury.

The injury occurred on September 6 during Iowa's matchup against Iowa State, when Ostrenga went down while attempting a catch. The setback sidelined him for the remainder of the 2025 season, but the rehabilitation process has been progressing smoothly. "He should be full speed in June. That's kind of been the target," Ferentz shared. "He hasn't done anything in pads at all. He's out there working and rehabbing, running, cutting, doing things that are really encouraging. The idea was if we could have him ready at the start of June, that'd be great. So, we expect him to be doing everything like the rest of the guys would when the summer program starts."

Ferentz added a note of optimism, stating, "Everything's been really encouraging. No setbacks."

Ostrenga has been a reliable target for the Hawkeyes when healthy, amassing 48 career catches for 320 yards and three touchdowns. His most productive campaign came in 2023, when he hauled in 31 receptions for 192 yards and two scores. However, injuries have plagued him over the past two seasons, limiting him to just 10 combined games in 2024 and 2025.

His anticipated return adds depth to an already promising tight end room heading into the 2026 season. The Hawkeyes will welcome back DJ Vonnahme, Thomas Meyer, and Zach Ortwerth. Vonnahme emerged as a breakout star last season, leading the team in receptions (29), receiving yards (434), and receiving touchdowns (three). Ortwerth brings 263 career receiving yards to the table, while Meyer—a rising young talent—has yet to record a catch but gained valuable game experience in his first season with the program.

Meyer praised Ostrenga's leadership during the recovery process. "He's a great leader. He's been helping me out, even when he's been hurt, and helping all of us out when he's been hurt," Meyer said in April. "He still comes into it every single day with a great attitude, which has got to be hard to do coming off an injury like that."

With Ostrenga's return on the horizon, Iowa's tight end corps looks poised to be a formidable force in the upcoming season—a unit that could make waves in the Big Ten and beyond.
