Yan Diomande is the name on everyone's lips this season, and for good reason. The 19-year-old winger has taken the Bundesliga by storm, racking up an impressive 13 goals and 9 assists in 35 appearances since his €20 million move from CD Leganés last summer. His explosive pace, tricky footwork, and eye for goal have made him one of the most exciting young talents in Europe.
It's no wonder, then, that some of the continent's biggest clubs are circling. Liverpool, in particular, are reportedly eyeing Diomande as a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah. But how does a teenager handle that kind of pressure? In a recent media roundtable, Diomande opened up about the speculation—and his response was as cool as his finishing.
"Of course, if you imagine someone saying you have to go to Chelsea or Real Madrid, you're going to be happy and motivated to do more," he said with a smile. "But I don't think about this kind of thing. I'm trying to stay focused on the pitch. My job is playing football, and I leave everything else outside. It gives me a lot of motivation to see clubs speak about me, but I'm focused."
That focus will be key as RB Leipzig look to hold onto their star asset. While club executives have made it clear they plan to keep Diomande beyond the summer, rumors of a potential €100 million exit continue to swirl. For his part, the Ivorian international remains grounded and grateful for the opportunity Leipzig gave him.
"My contract runs until 2030, so I have four more years," Diomande explained. "I don't know what's going to happen after that. I'm a Leipzig player." Still, he acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the sport: "Anything can happen in football."
What's certain is Diomande's determination to repay the club's faith. "That's a big motivation because nobody knew me before," he said. "Paying €20 million for a player that nobody knows is a lot." As he prepares to close out the season with Leipzig and gear up for the World Cup with Côte d'Ivoire, one thing is clear: whether he stays or goes, this is just the beginning for a player who's already dressing like a star and playing like one, too.
