The Pittsburgh Steelers have completely revamped their offense this offseason, but one of the most intriguing battles is shaping up at the wide receiver position—and it might not go the way many expected.
According to insider Mark Fittipaldo, rookie Germie Bernard has the "inside track" to claim the WR3 role over Roman Wilson. Bernard, a second-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, is already turning heads at Steelers rookie minicamp, and Fittipaldo believes he could see game-day action right away.
"I think he's going to be thrown into it right away," Fittipaldo said, as reported alongside the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac. "His competition right now in training camp would be Roman Wilson. Roman Wilson has had two difficult seasons trying to find his way into the NFL. So, Bernard really has an opportunity if he steps in, learns the playbook and plays well, I think he's got the inside track on that job."
For context, Wilson was selected by the Steelers with the 84th overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. However, his first two seasons have been underwhelming—he's caught just 21 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. In a loaded offense now featuring DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman, Wilson was expected to compete for the No. 3 spot, but Bernard's emergence could change that.
If Bernard does leapfrog Wilson on the depth chart, it's hard to see a third-year breakout for the former third-rounder, even in what promises to be a high-powered Steelers attack this season. For fans keeping an eye on the competition, this is a battle that could define the depth chart heading into the regular season.
