Let's be real—the Philadelphia Phillies' 2026 season has had its share of headaches, and few have been bigger than Alec Bohm. Once viewed as a promising All-Star, the third baseman has struggled to deliver the production the team needs, and the pressure is mounting.
Bohm's decline has been tough to watch. After back-to-back 97-RBI seasons, including an All-Star nod in 2024, he's now hitting just .177 this year. Outside of a flash of brilliance on Saturday—when he went 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double—he's been one of baseball's least productive hitters. The Phillies have even benched him at times, and the frustration is palpable.
Trade rumors have swirled around Bohm for years, but nothing has materialized. Now, with the team sitting at 18-22 and desperate for a spark, those whispers are getting louder. According to Scott Lauber of The Inquirer, Phillies president Dave Dombrowski may not have the luxury of waiting until the August trade deadline to make a move.
"The Phillies discussed trading Bohm two winters ago after he was an All-Star in 2024. They would've moved on from him in January if free agent Bo Bichette accepted their $200 million offer. In both instances, their instinct may have been correct," Lauber reported. He added that with the team ranking 28th in OPS at third base (.514) and 26th in the cleanup spot (.612), Dombrowski might be forced to act sooner rather than later.
It's never easy to part ways with a player who once showed so much promise. Bohm's first-half brilliance a few years ago felt like the start of something special. But baseball is a results-driven business, and if the Phillies are serious about making a postseason push, they may have no choice but to move on.
The question now is: will Dombrowski pull the trigger before the trade deadline, or will he give Bohm one last chance to turn it around? Either way, the clock is ticking.
