UCLA football is making serious noise on the recruiting trail, and the buzz around Westwood is starting to sound a lot like another recent college football Cinderella story.

For the first time since the 2013 season, the Bruins have cracked the top 10 of the national recruiting rankings. Their 2027 class currently sits at No. 4 overall on 247 Sports, powered by 16 total commitments—and seven of those are four-star prospects. The momentum has been especially electric in early May, with six pledges coming in just the first few days of the month.

The headliner of the class so far is four-star safety Jerry Outhouse Jr., who flipped his commitment from powerhouse Georgia to join the Bruins. That kind of recruiting win signals a shift in the program's trajectory under new head coach Bob Chesney.

And here’s where the comparisons start to get interesting. The path Chesney is carving at UCLA looks strikingly similar to the one Kurt Cignetti blazed at Indiana. Both coaches came from James Madison University (JMU), bringing key staffers and players with them. For Cignetti, that blueprint led to two College Football Playoff appearances, a national championship, and a Heisman Trophy winner.

Chesney has followed suit, bringing over assistant coaches Chris Smith (run game), Eddie Whitley Jr. (cornerbacks), Anthony DiMichele (safeties), Sam Daniels (defensive line), and Drew Canan (tight ends/special teams). On top of that, 10 players from JMU's 2025 roster—which made the CFP—transferred to UCLA with him.

So what makes UCLA's situation even more promising than Indiana's? Two big factors: market size and recruiting firepower. The Bruins are building in the heart of Los Angeles, one of the biggest media markets in the country, and they already have a top-10 class to show for it. Indiana, by contrast, achieved its success with a smaller brand and back-to-back classes ranked outside the top 55.

The recruiting momentum isn't slowing down, either. Four-star wide receiver Ty Johnson, out of Irvine, California, has UCLA in his final three schools. And four-star quarterback Wonderful "Champ" Monds has already made his college commitment, further solidifying the Bruins' position as a destination program.

With a top-tier class, a proven coaching staff, and a blueprint that's already yielded championship results elsewhere, UCLA football is building something that looks a lot like the next great college football resurgence. And this time, it's happening under the bright lights of Los Angeles.
