Tony Bland has officially wrapped up his first season as an assistant coach on Bill Self's Kansas basketball staff, a campaign that saw the Jayhawks advance to the NCAA tournament's round of 32. With the offseason now in full swing, details of Bland's contract with KU have come to light, offering a glimpse into the program's investment in its coaching future.
The agreement, effective from January 14, 2026, establishes a base salary structure that reflects both his initial onboarding and long-term value. For the first prorated period through June 30, 2026, Bland will earn $130,000. That figure sees a significant jump starting July 1, 2026, to an annual base salary of $550,000, with potential for increases upon review by Kansas Athletics.
Notably, the contract includes a one-year rolling term that renews annually on July 1 at the discretion of head coach Bill Self, providing stability while aligning with the program's leadership. The deal also covers a buyout clause, with KU agreeing to pay Washington up to $207,504 related to the termination of Bland's previous contract with the Huskies.
Performance incentives are built into the agreement, rewarding team success in true Kansas fashion. Bland can earn $25,000 for a Big 12 regular-season title and another $25,000 for a Big 12 tournament championship. Making an appearance in the NCAA tournament also triggers a bonus, underscoring the program's perennial high expectations.
