Real Madrid's injury woes continue as left-back Ferland Mendy faces another major setback. The French defender is set to undergo surgery in the coming days after picking up a new muscle injury during the match against RCD Espanyol, according to reports from MARCA.

This latest blow comes as a serious complication for both the player and the club, especially with the summer transfer window approaching. Mendy will be operated on for an injury to the rectus femoris tendon in his right leg—a familiar issue that has plagued him before.

Just over a year ago, in April 2025, Mendy underwent surgery for a similar rupture of the proximal tendon of the rectus femoris in his right quadriceps. Since recovering from that operation, the 29-year-old has struggled to find consistent playing time, logging just 448 minutes on the pitch this season.

This marks Mendy's fifth fitness setback of the campaign, and it will require another surgical procedure. However, this time the operation won't take place in Spain. Instead, Mendy is expected to travel to Finland to consult with Dr. Lasse Lempainen, the same specialist who recently operated on teammate Eder Militao.

The timing couldn't be worse for Real Madrid. Mendy was reportedly one of the candidates for a potential summer departure, with his contract running until 2028. But with a recovery timeline of four to five months following surgery, any hopes of a summer sale have been severely complicated.

For a player who has been a key part of Real Madrid's defensive setup when fit, this injury raises questions about his long-term future at the Santiago Bernabéu. Will the club look to move on, or will they give him another chance to recover? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Mendy's road back to the pitch just got a lot longer.
