In the unforgiving world of the UFC, fighters often battle through pain that fans never see. A recent revelation from former bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili has shed light on one such instance, adding a new layer of context to his title loss.

Dvalishvili has disclosed that he entered his UFC 323 title defense against Petr Yan in December 2025 while dealing with a significant injury. In a candid interview, "The Machine" admitted that UFC doctors had even advised him he could withdraw from the high-stakes bout.

"During the camp there were things, you know," Dvalishvili explained. "Like some UFC doctors told me that I can pull out, but that’s not who I am. I like to deal with challenges." He emphasized his warrior mentality, stating he was willing to fight the best four times a year and accept the risks that come with it.

Despite his trademark resilience, Dvalishvili couldn't overcome the combined challenge of a prime Petr Yan and his own physical limitations. Yan dominated the fight to capture the belt, a loss Dvalishvili has taken in stride. His focus quickly shifted to the promise of an immediate rematch. "After I lost, I was fine. I just moved on," he said, noting the UFC assured him a shot at the new champion.

The timeline for that rematch has been complicated by injuries on both sides. Yan underwent back surgery in January, while Dvalishvili suffered another broken nose in April. With both men now on the mend, Dvalishvili is in a holding pattern, simply waiting for the call. "I’m just hoping right after June, like, July," he said, ready to reclaim the belt he never lost at 100%.

This story is a stark reminder of the grit required at the sport's highest level. True champions are defined not just by their victories, but by their willingness to compete through adversity, embodying the relentless spirit that defines the fight game.
