Reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Alex Palou kicked off his title defense in style, topping the opening day of practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Spanish driver, who was the first to hit the track for the six-hour session, remained relatively quiet early on due to what he described as a "balancing issue." But in a dramatic final 10 minutes, Palou laid down a blistering 225.937 mph lap in the #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to seize the top spot.

Marcus Armstrong of Meyer Shank Racing had held the lead for most of the day, posting a strong 225.895 mph lap that looked unbeatable—until Palou's late surge bumped him to second. Conor Daly, piloting the #23 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Chevrolet, rounded out the top three at 225.838 mph, making him the fastest Chevy driver on the day.

Two-time Indy 500 winner and two-time IndyCar Series champion Josef Newgarden was close behind in fourth at 225.121 mph in the #2 Team Penske Chevrolet. Six-time series champion Scott Dixon, the 2008 Indy 500 winner, secured fifth at 225.087 mph in the #9 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Graham Rahal (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing) took sixth, followed by Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood in seventh. Team Penske's Scott McLaughlin was eighth, with Romain Grosjean (Dale Coyne Racing) and David Malukas (Team Penske) rounding out the top 10.

But the day wasn't just about tow speeds. Kirkwood also impressed in the no-tow category, leading the field at 222.062 mph. His teammate, 2018 Indy 500 winner Will Power, was second in no-tow speeds at 221.455 mph, while Dreyer & Reinbold Racing's Jack "Hollywood" Harvey took third.

On the lap count front, ECR's Alexander Rossi—who finished 13th overall at 223.585 mph—was the workhorse of the day, logging a session-high 116 laps, the only driver to break the century mark. Daly and Christian Rasmussen tied for second-most laps with 89 each. At the other end of the spectrum, 2014 Indy 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, making his one-off debut with Arrow McLaren, ran just 27 laps, while Palou was second-fewest with 28.

With the opening day in the books, the stage is set for an electrifying month of May at the Brickyard. Stay tuned for more updates as the field battles for speed, consistency, and a shot at glory.
