The Indianapolis Colts might be rethinking their game plan with Anthony Richardson. While the team enjoyed a strong 2025 season, their young quarterback didn't get to share in that success. A fractured orbital bone suffered during pregame warmups kept the 23-year-old off the field entirely, robbing him of crucial in-game reps.

It was a tough break for the former first-round pick and the Colts organization. Indianapolis hasn't signaled a full breakup just yet, but declining Richardson's fifth-year option sent a clear message: they're not ready to make a long-term commitment to the No. 4 overall pick from the 2023 NFL Draft.

Trade talks have been swirling, with the Colts reportedly open to moving the cannon-armed, dual-threat quarterback. Many expected those discussions to heat up during the 2026 NFL Draft, when teams missed out on their preferred QB prospects. But two weeks after the draft, Richardson is still wearing a Colts uniform.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the team isn't in a rush to part ways. "There could be injuries, there could be a team that a quarterback struggles," Schefter noted. "There might be somebody who's willing to pay more for Anthony Richardson in August than they were in April." The Colts are essentially playing the long game, holding onto their high-upside backup and waiting for the right opportunity.

It's a strategy we've seen before in the NFL. Injuries can strike at any moment, and when they do, the value of a talented backup skyrockets. For now, Richardson gives the Colts insurance as Daniel Jones works his way back from a torn Achilles. With star potential waiting in the wings, Indianapolis might just find themselves in a position to benefit from another team's misfortune down the road.
