Fernando Mendoza will all but certainly be the highest drafted quarterback in program history and first No. 1 pick in decades.

Believe it or not, an Indiana football player has actually been selected with the first overall pick of the NFL Draft before. Richard Corbett “Corby” Davis, an Indiana native and fullback for the Hoosiers, was picked first overall by the Cleveland Rams in 1938.

Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner and national champion, can still make some history on Thursday night as the first Hoosier quarterback selected first overall. He’s set to become the program’s 15th first round pick in either the AFL or NFL Drafts and the first since wide receiver Thomas Lewis was picked 27th overall by the New York Giants in 1994.

He’ll be Indiana’s first quarterback selected since last year’s draft when Kurtis Rourke was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round with the 227th overall pick. The second highest-drafted quarterback, Babe Laufenberg was selected in the sixth round with the 168th overall pick by the Washington Commanders in the 1983 NFL Draft. Laufenberg has been having quite a bit of fun with that fact on Twitter.

Mendoza has already made plenty of history as the program’s first Heisman Trophy winner, first Davey O’Brien award winner, first Manning Award winner, the first quarterback to lead Indiana to a national championship, setting the program’s all-time single season passing touchdowns record, single game completion percentage record.
