The Indiana Fever have a new rookie who's already making waves—and not just with her game. First-round pick Raven Johnson, the dynamic point guard out of the University of South Carolina, has been turning heads through three preseason outings. Her disruptive defense and slick ball-handling have made it clear why she was drafted so high, and she's already making life easier for star guard Caitlin Clark. But it was a moment at Monday's practice that had everyone smiling.
When asked what she's learned from head coach Stephanie White, Johnson didn't hold back. "Oh, she's funny," Johnson said with a grin. "Don't tell her this, but her wife came to practice the other day, and I was like, 'Dang! You got some taste! Her wife is beautiful.'"
The rookie was clearly impressed with White's partner, veteran sports journalist Lisa Salters. But Johnson was quick to praise White's coaching chops too. "She's teaching me a lot of things, she gets on me. I think she's a great coach, a great person to go to, and I ask her a lot of questions often," Johnson added.
During the same practice, White provided an update on forward Monique Billings, who tweaked her ankle after landing on an opponent's foot under the basket in the first quarter. "We have an opportunity, as with most ankle tweaks, to reevaluate tomorrow and see where she is," White said, noting that Billings told her she's going to be fine.
The Fever are gearing up to open their season on May 10 against the Dallas Wings—a matchup that will showcase the league's last four first overall picks. With Johnson's energy on and off the court, the Fever are shaping up to be a team to watch this season.
