When the Stanley Cup Playoffs began, neither Ross Colton nor Mackenzie Blackwood was part of the Colorado Avalanche's immediate game plan. Colton had to wait three games for his debut, while Blackwood didn't see action until Game 3 of the second round against the Minnesota Wild—and even then, it was in a relief role. But in Game 4, both players proved that patience and perseverance pay off in the biggest moments.
Colton and Blackwood were instrumental in the Avalanche's crucial 5-2 victory, giving Colorado a commanding 3-1 series lead heading back to Denver for a potential clincher. Their contributions didn't go unnoticed by teammates, who praised their resilience and positive attitudes after the game.
"He was awesome all night. He kept us in it," one teammate said of Blackwood. "He came to the rink these last couple of weeks. I know it's hard for him, but they're an amazing tandem. He came with the right attitude, got better every day, and when his number was called, he was ready to go."
Colton, who had been battling a scoring drought, finally broke through with a big playoff goal. "I was super happy for him. That's a big goal, and I love the emotion he showed," another teammate added. "It's not like he's not getting scoring chances—he had a partial breakaway earlier. He just needed something to go in. It's been a long grind for him, but as long as you're working and creating chances, they'll start going in. I'll take one big playoff goal over a handful of regular-season goals every day."
For Colton, the goal was a reward for staying the course. "I love scoring. I feel like everybody does," he said. "Throughout the year, I was doing a lot of things right, but they just weren't going my way. It is what it is. I just come to the rink every day trying to get a little bit better."
Their stories are a testament to the mental toughness required in hockey—and a reminder that the right attitude can turn a long wait into a memorable breakthrough. Whether you're a player or a fan, there's something inspiring about seeing hard work finally pay off on the biggest stage.
