After more than five years of chasing the podium, JDC-Miller MotorSports finally broke through in dramatic fashion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, snapping a winless drought with a last-lap pass that will go down in IMSA history.
Laurin Heinrich pulled off the decisive move in Turn 5 behind the wheel of the No. 5 Porsche 963, overtaking Earl Bamber in the No. 31 Cadillac V-Series.R to claim the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) victory by just 0.758 seconds. The win marks the first time a privateer team has triumphed in the GTP category, a milestone that reshapes the competitive landscape of IMSA's top class.
For JDC-Miller, this victory is their fifth in IMSA competition and their first since the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in 2021. The team had been winless since the hybrid prototype era began with the rebranded GTP category in 2023, with their best finish in that span being a third-place result at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in September 2024.
"It hasn't sunk in 100 percent yet, but certainly this is one of the biggest wins," said team principal John Church. "We started here four years ago and didn't have any idea what we were doing with this car and have slowly been building and picking up the pace. We've been fighting an uphill battle the last couple years, so this is really special."
Heinrich, who co-drove with Tijmen van der Helm, credited the team's strategy and tire management for the breakthrough. Van der Helm started 11th—dead last in the GTP field—but the duo clawed their way forward throughout the race.
"This place seems to work for me and I love it, to be honest," Heinrich said. "Every time I come here in the morning and see this track, I feel something special. The team has given Tijmen and me an extremely strong car, extremely well balanced. I think our strength was tires, which we could really make use of in the last four or five laps. The strategy also worked great. To have all this work pay off is incredible."
For fans of endurance racing, this victory is a reminder that persistence and precision can overcome even the deepest odds. Whether you're trackside or watching from home, moments like these fuel the passion for motorsport—and the gear that gets you there.
