Ilia Topuria is entering the biggest fight of his career with a fire that’s never burned brighter—and he wants everyone to know it.

The reigning UFC Lightweight champion is set to defend his 155-pound title against interim champ Justin Gaethje in the historic UFC White House card on June 14, 2026, in Washington, D.C. After nearly a full year away from the cage, some fans wondered if the undefeated two-division champion had lost his edge. Topuria says the exact opposite is true.

“I’ve seen the complaints. Actually, I’m way more motivated now because I don’t have any more fear around,” Topuria told ESPN. “I don’t fear anymore that I’m going to have to pay some bills or pay some person or whatever. For the first time, I’m doing it because I really want to do it. If I didn’t want to fight, I wouldn’t fight. So this is the first time that I really want to fight.”

That’s a sobering thought for the rest of the lightweight division. Topuria has already bulldozed elite competition across two weight classes, capturing UFC gold and becoming one of combat sports’ biggest stars. Now, free from the brutal Featherweight weight cuts and the financial pressure that once drove him, “El Matador” believes he’s operating on a whole new level.

The oddsmakers agree. Topuria enters as a massive -700 favorite over Gaethje, a line so lopsided that even the champion finds it strange.

“It is just weird,” Topuria said. “I don’t like the fact that I’m so favored. Everyone already knows that I’m going to win—and there is no big expectation, like ‘What’s going to happen in the fight!?’ Now they are trying to guess how quickly I will knock him out. I’ve never had that.”

With no fear, no weight-cut stress, and nothing left to prove except to himself, Topuria is stepping into the cage on June 14 with a mindset that could make an already dangerous fighter even more unstoppable. For fans and fighters alike, that’s the kind of motivation that changes everything.
