When Ildemaro Vargas stepped to the plate today, the weight of history was on his shoulders. By going 0-for-4, his remarkable 27-game hitting streak came to an end—but what a run it was.

This streak now stands as the second-longest in Arizona Diamondbacks franchise history, surpassed only by club legend Luis Gonzalez's 30-game tear back in 1999. That's right—it's been over 27 years since any D-back has come this close to Gonzalez's record. In the two decades since, only three players have even reached 20 games: Paul Goldschmidt (26 games in 2013-14), Ketel Marte (21 games in 2024), and now Vargas.

What makes this achievement truly remarkable is that nobody saw it coming. If you had asked fans before the season who might challenge the franchise record, Vargas would have been among the longest shots. Corbin Carroll? Sure. Ketel Marte? Absolutely, especially given his previous 21-game streak. But Vargas entered this season with a career batting average of just .249, and his previous best hitting streak was a modest 10 games back in 2022 with Washington.

The fact that Vargas opened the season with a 24-game hitting streak adds another layer of impressiveness. That's the longest streak to start a campaign in 50 years, since Ron LeFlore of the Detroit Tigers reached 30 games at the beginning of 1976. During this run, Vargas was batting an astonishing .404 through 99 plate appearances—the deepest any Arizona player has carried a .400 average into a season.

While Gonzalez's 1999 record remains intact, Vargas has etched his name into Diamondbacks history in a way few could have predicted. For a player who entered the season as an afterthought in most lineups, this streak proved that baseball's magic often comes from the most unexpected places.
