Sam Bullas and Aaron Nell are stepping down at the end of a successful season for Swindon Wildcats.

Two pillars of the Swindon Wildcats, captain Sam Bullas and player-coach Aaron Nell, are hanging up their skates at the conclusion of a historic season, closing the book on a combined 1,681 games for the club. Their retirement marks the end of an era for the NIHL franchise.

Captain Sam "Bully" Bullas is stepping away after a club-record 876 appearances over 16 dedicated years. His final campaign coincides with a major life event, as he and his wife are expecting their first child. Bullas expressed mixed emotions, stating he'll miss the camaraderie of the team and the roar of the fans, but is excited to begin his family life. Winning the upcoming play-offs, he said, would be "the icing on the cake" of his career.

He retires alongside Aaron Nell, a legendary figure in Swindon who served as player-coach. Nell leaves as the club's all-time highest scorer, having notched 805 games. Their departures follow a triumphant regular season where the Wildcats clinched the NIHL league title, England's second-tier professional league just below the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL).

Now, the duo and their team have their sights set on a rare "double." They have qualified top of their group for the NIHL Play-off Finals in Coventry on April 18-19. In ice hockey, the play-off championship often carries immense prestige, sometimes overshadowing the lengthy league campaign. "It's a bit funny in ice hockey," Bullas noted, acknowledging the seven-month grind of the league while highlighting the team's excitement for the playoff challenge.

Completing the league and play-off double is a rare feat, and achieving it would be a perfect send-off for these two club icons. As Bullas put it, with the talented team they've built this year, the expectation was to reach finals weekend—now it's time to bring that play-off cup to Swindon for the first time.
