The IBF has made a pivotal decision regarding Oleksandr Usyk's heavyweight title as the unified champion prepares for an unprecedented crossover bout against kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven. The fight, set for May 23 at the iconic pyramids of Giza in Egypt, will see Usyk defend his WBC heavyweight belt against the Dutch powerhouse.

Usyk currently holds the IBF, WBA, and WBO titles alongside his WBC belt, making him the undisputed heavyweight king. However, this voluntary defense against Verhoeven—a non-boxer—has created a chain reaction among the sanctioning bodies. The WBC has already signaled that it will enforce its mandatory defense next, meaning Usyk must face a WBC-ordered challenger or risk being stripped of that belt.

Now, the IBF has stepped in to secure its position. In a statement issued Thursday, the organization granted Usyk permission to fight Verhoeven without immediately losing his IBF title—but with strict conditions. "If Usyk loses on May 23, the IBF Heavyweight title will be declared vacant immediately," the statement read. "If Usyk wins, he must face the IBF mandatory challenger within 90 days."

The decision came after the IBF acknowledged the rotation system among boxing's major sanctioning bodies. With the WBC's mandatory next in line, followed by the WBA's, the IBF determined that no other boxers would be adversely affected by allowing this unique exhibition-style bout. The board of directors approved the exception request on April 29, ensuring that the Ukrainian champion won't be penalized for taking on a fighter from a different combat sport.

For Usyk, this is a high-stakes gamble. A win keeps his unified reign intact, but a loss would cost him not just the fight but one of his most prestigious titles. For Verhoeven, it's a chance to shock the boxing world and claim a piece of heavyweight history. The fight at Giza promises to be a spectacle unlike any other, blending the ancient setting with modern combat sports drama.
