‘I’m Here Now’: Hurricanes Nicolas Deslauriers Reflects on Surprise Playoff Matchup Against Flyers

When the Carolina Hurricanes hit the ice for Round Two of the playoffs, one player will have a little extra on his mind. For Nicolas Deslauriers, facing the Philadelphia Flyers isn't just another series—it's a full-circle moment he never saw coming.

Deslauriers, known around the league as a reliable enforcer and locker room presence, was traded from the Flyers to the Hurricanes at the deadline. At the time, Philly's playoff hopes were all but dashed. "If you were to ask me that question on trade deadline, I would have never thought this was going to happen," Deslauriers said with a shake of his head. "But good on them. I think we've got business to do here, and I'm on this side now."

The irony isn't lost on anyone. Back on March 18, the Flyers had just a 3.8% chance of making the postseason. Fast forward a few weeks, and they've clawed their way into a second-round matchup against the very team that acquired Deslauriers in a deadline deal. "They switched the tide around, that's for sure," he said, tipping his cap to his former club's resilience.

For Deslauriers, the trade was about more than just a change of scenery. After 195 games in a Flyers sweater—the second-most he's played for any NHL team—he knew he needed a fresh start. "Obviously, I had kind of a weird season there," he reflected. "We were testing a lot of young guys at the start of the year, and I didn't play much. But I just tried to bring a good attitude off the ice. At one point, for me and my career, I wanted a change. And I'm happy they gave it to me. And I'm here now."

And "here now" meant making an immediate impact. When the Hurricanes swept the Ottawa Senators in the first round, Deslauriers stepped into the lineup due to an injury to Nikolaj Ehlers. It was his first postseason action since 2022, when he played five games for the Minnesota Wild. But you wouldn't have known it from his performance. "I don't know that I've seen a guy that played as little as that have as much impact on the game," head coach Rod Brind'Amour said, praising Deslauriers' effort and grit.

That kind of story—a veteran finding his footing in a new city, only to face his old team on the biggest stage—is what makes playoff hockey so compelling. For Deslauriers, the message is simple: the past is the past, and all that matters now is the next shift, the next game, and the next opportunity to make a difference in a Hurricanes jersey.
