Francis Ngannou believes he will be defending his position as the world's number one MMA heavyweight on Saturday.

Francis Ngannou is ready to remind the world why he's still the baddest man on the planet. The former UFC heavyweight champion steps back into the cage this Saturday in California to face Philipe Lins, and he's making one thing crystal clear: he's the lineal heavyweight champion of MMA.

While the sport doesn't officially recognize a lineal title like boxing does, Ngannou's claim carries serious weight. He never lost his UFC belt—he walked away from the promotion in 2023 as the reigning champion, a move that shocked the MMA world. Since then, Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall have claimed UFC gold, but Ngannou remains undefeated in MMA since November 2018 and hasn't lost a step in the cage.

"I never lost the UFC title, but I didn't lose the PFL title either," Ngannou said confidently. "Of course I'm defending my position as the number one heavyweight."

The 39-year-old Cameroonian's journey from UFC king to free agent trailblazer has been anything but conventional. After a bitter falling out with UFC brass and Dana White—which he describes as "horrible"—Ngannou bet on himself and won big. He's earned millions in boxing, including a lucrative crossover fight with Tyson Fury, and now finds himself headlining a historic MVP-Netflix card alongside MMA legend Ronda Rousey, who returns to the cage for the first time in a decade.

For Ngannou, this fight represents more than just another win on his resume. It's about proving that fighters have options outside the UFC machine. "It's very important that fighters have an alternative," Ngannou told reporters. "The UFC contracts are not fair—they give all the rights to the promoter and don't protect the fighter. Fighters are just an asset, and they can get rid of you when they want."

His advice to the next generation of fighters? "Stand your ground and believe in yourself. When making your decision, consider the worst-case scenario. As long as you're OK with that, you can take the leap."

On Saturday, Ngannou will do exactly that—proving that sometimes the biggest risks lead to the biggest rewards, both inside and outside the cage.
