Ricarda Walkling has been a mainstay in the Bundesliga for over six years, but this summer, she's trading the green of Werder Bremen for the iconic black and yellow of Borussia Dortmund. In an exclusive interview, the new signing opens up about her exciting career move, what drives her, and why she is ready to make a difference at BVB.
On Choosing Dortmund: A Gut Feeling and a Big Vision
When asked what convinced her to make the switch, Ricarda doesn't hesitate. "Definitely Dortmund’s plan and the goals they want to achieve in the coming years," she says. "They are impressive. Borussia Dortmund are a big club in Germany. That’s why I’m happy and very proud to soon be a part of it." Just like when she joined Werder Bremen, this decision came straight from the heart. "My gut feeling again," she confirms. "I always make such decisions based on my instincts, but I also listen to the people close to me, of course."
On League Standing: A Step Back or a Launchpad?
At first glance, moving from a top-flight Bundesliga side to a team currently competing in the lower leagues might seem like a step back. But Ricarda sees it differently. "I would only see it as a step backwards in terms of league standing," she explains. "It’s a fantastic club with highly professional conditions and a superb team. I’m simply looking forward to training and playing here. And if you set yourself high goals, things will soon look different in terms of league standings." For a player who thrives on ambition, the potential is what matters most.
On Ambition and the BVB Project
Even with the uncertainty of whether the team will play in the 2nd Bundesliga or the Regionalliga next season, Ricarda's conviction is unwavering. "It’s the feeling that everyone in charge has given me," she says. "I’m really eager to be able to make a difference and to be allowed to do so. I’m looking forward to playing. I hope I can pass on my experience and help others. It’s simply this great desire to play, regardless of the league." She adds, "I’m someone who needs goals in life. I like the vision and the path that’s been shown to me. More than 3,000 spectators in the Regionalliga is a lot more than at many other Bundesliga matches. That’s confirmation for me that we’re on the right track – and simply very cool."
On Her Playing Style: Calm, Technical, and a Leader
So, what can BVB fans expect to see on the pitch? "My ball control and passing accuracy," Ricarda states. "I’m more of a technical player who is calm on the ball. Above all, I want to project calmness, lead by example, take responsibility, and contribute." It's a profile that perfectly suits a team building for the future—a steady hand with the vision to match the club's lofty ambitions.
