Hunter Wohler injury update: Latest news on Colts' safety

Speaking with the media recently, Colts' second-year safety Hunter Wohler provided an injury update.

The Indianapolis Colts are on the verge of getting a key defensive piece back, as second-year safety Hunter Wohler is nearing his return to the gridiron. After a promising start to training camp last summer was abruptly halted by a Lisfranc injury during a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, Wohler underwent surgery and spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve. It's been a long road back, but the young safety is optimistic about his progress.

"We're getting there," Wohler told reporters recently via Roundtable Sports. "We're real close. I feel good. Body feels good. I'm just excited to get back on the field. I'm excited to get back playing, get around the guys. Just have some fun."

While Wohler remained non-committal about his availability for OTAs or mandatory minicamp in June, he expressed confidence that he'll be fully ready for training camp. Before the injury, he was carving out a role as the Colts' third safety, and the coaching staff remains high on his potential. Head coach Shane Steichen praised Wohler's instincts at the NFL combine, noting, "Hunter on the back end playing safety, the ball just found him in training camp. He had a great sense, a great feel playing the coverages... He was always in the right spot at the right time. He had a hell of a camp."

With a starting spot alongside Cam Bynum up for grabs, Wohler will compete with AJ Haulcy, Juanyeh Thomas, and Jonathan Owens for snaps. However, he may be best suited for that third safety role in big dime packages, where his coverage skills and run support can make a real impact. For Colts fans and fantasy enthusiasts alike, Wohler's return could be a game-changer for Indianapolis's secondary depth this season.
