Trai Hume says he has enjoyed a "whirlwind" rise in football after establishing himself for Sunderland and Northern Ireland.

Trai Hume is living proof that the path to the top doesn't always follow the traditional route. The 24-year-old Sunderland defender, fresh off winning Northern Ireland Football Association Writers' International Player of the Year, describes his rise as nothing short of a "whirlwind."

"In the last five years, I've gone from the Irish League to the Premier League," Hume reflects. "When you think of it that way, it sounds a bit crazy, but it's just part of the journey I've been on."

Hume's story is one of resilience and belief. After being bypassed for a move across the water at 16, he sharpened his skills in the Irish Premiership with Ballymena United before joining Linfield, where he quickly emerged as one of Northern Ireland's brightest prospects. That persistence paid off in 2022 when he made the leap to Sunderland.

Now a mainstay at the Stadium of Light, Hume has been an ever-present for the Black Cats this season, featuring in all 37 of their Premier League matches. His consistency at the back has been instrumental in Sunderland's push for a European spot—a remarkable turnaround for a side that started the season with survival as the primary goal.

"We had a job at the start of the season to stay up, and we've done that," Hume says. "We're not far off the European spot, but we're just pushing every day to get better and improve. If we can get up there at the end of the season, then it's something that we can be proud of."

Hume's contributions haven't gone unnoticed. He was named Sunderland's 2024-25 Player of the Season, a testament to his defensive reliability and growing leadership. Alongside fellow Northern Ireland international Dan Ballard, he has formed a formidable partnership that has kept the Wearsiders competitive at the highest level.

At the international level, Hume has also stepped up, even wearing the captain's armband for Northern Ireland. It's a responsibility he wears with pride, a symbol of how far he's come since his days in the Irish League.

For young players dreaming of making it big, Hume's journey is a powerful reminder that the road less traveled can lead to extraordinary destinations. His story isn't just about talent—it's about patience, hard work, and seizing the moment when opportunity knocks.
