The 2026 Phil Tochelli Junior High Championships delivered a day of unforgettable performances, with young athletes from across the region showcasing their speed, strength, and determination. In the Class 3A girls' competition, Abington Heights dominated the team standings with an impressive 107 points, leaving North Pocono (85 points) and Wallenpaupack (64 points) in their wake.
The Comets set the tone early in the 3200-meter relay, with the team of Peoples, Stark, Grady, and Williams crossing the line in 10:42.45—just ahead of Valley View and Wallenpaupack. Rachel Regan proved to be a force to be reckoned with, claiming victory in the 100-meter hurdles (16.94) and the 200-meter dash (27.38), while also anchoring the winning 400-meter relay squad. In the distance events, Vella Byrne of Scranton stole the show, winning both the 1600 meters (5:21.28) and the 800 meters (2:31.92) with commanding performances.
Field events saw record-breaking moments, as Wallenpaupack's Alexa Ezzo launched the javelin 99 feet even to set a new meet record. Abington Heights' Talya Seid matched that feat in the pole vault, clearing 9-0 to tie the meet record alongside North Pocono's Evelyn Kramer. North Pocono's Emma Havenstrite was a double winner in the throws, taking the shot put (31-0.75) and discus (73-0), while teammate Clara Kurilla swept the jumps with wins in the long jump (14-9) and triple jump (31-7).
On the boys' side, Valley View emerged as the team to beat, racking up 91 points to outpace Wallenpaupack (70) and North Pocono (63.5). The Spartans' depth was on full display as they claimed victory in the 400-meter relay (48.06) and the 3200-meter relay (9:38.21). Christian Kupinski led the charge with a win in the 100-meter dash (11.93), while Rowan Castles took the 800 meters in 2:18.85.
Honesdale's Owen Gries showed his versatility, finishing second in the 100 meters and anchoring the winning 1600-meter relay team (3:52.79). Wallenpaupack's Matthew Fite was a standout in the hurdles, winning the 300-meter hurdles (44.63) and placing third in the 110-meter hurdles. In the field, Valley View's Ethan Namlick and North Pocono's Sam Smith traded podium finishes, with Smith taking the 400 meters in 55.96 and Namlick securing second in the same event.
