Newcastle United fans hoping for a marquee striker signing this summer might need to temper their expectations. Manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that the club is not actively pursuing a new centre-forward, despite some attacking struggles last season.
Following the high-profile departure of Alexander Isak last summer, the Magpies invested heavily in Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade. However, neither has managed to fully replicate the Sweden international's prolific impact, leading to questions about the club's forward line.
When asked directly if a striker was a priority for the upcoming transfer window, Howe was clear: "Certainly not at the moment, because in terms of the striker numbers we've got, we've got healthy numbers in that position."
The Newcastle boss acknowledged the team's challenges in finding the right attacking rhythm. "I'd say it's been a challenge for us, trying to find the right balance, trying to find a way to continually score goals and create the amount of chances that we want to. I don't think we're quite there yet," he admitted.
Instead of looking outward, Howe is focusing on unlocking the potential within his current squad. "I think we've got work to do in that area but obviously Yoane (Wissa) has had fitness struggles, Will Osula has really grown late into the season and I think he's done really well in recent games, of course Anthony (Gordon) has played there, Nick (Woltemade) has played there and done well earlier in the season."
With a blend of experienced signings and emerging talents like Osula, Howe is confident the solution lies in chemistry, not new arrivals. "I think the players are there, we've just got to try and bring it all together and make it work."
