Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe says he left forward Anthony Gordon on the bench for the second week running because he is "looking at the future".

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has offered a fascinating glimpse into his long-term vision for the club, explaining why star forward Anthony Gordon found himself on the bench for the second consecutive week. The decision, which raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike, was a deliberate tactical move with one eye firmly on the future.

Gordon, the team's top scorer and an England international, has been the subject of formal interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. Though he missed April's defeats to Arsenal and Bournemouth with a minor hip flexor issue, he was fit enough to make the bench for the subsequent clashes against Brighton and Nottingham Forest. Yet, in both games, Howe chose not to call upon his services.

"It was tactical," Howe explained to BBC Radio Newcastle after Sunday's 1-1 draw at the City Ground. "The team has performed well in Anthony's absence. We've gone with a bit more solidity, playing Joelinton wide and one winger on the other side to strengthen us defensively. Since January, we've been disappointed with how we've defended, so it was a change of structure. Ant has come back to fitness and is training well, but I'm also looking at the future."

Howe's forward-thinking approach was also evident in his handling of Kieran Trippier. The former England international, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season, was left out of the starting XI despite being the only fit recognised right-back available due to injuries to Lewis Miley and Tino Livramento. Instead, left-back Lewis Hall filled in on the opposite side, with Trippier only entering the fray in injury time for captain Bruno Guimaraes.

"We have got one eye on the future," Howe added, reflecting on an afternoon where former Newcastle midfielder Elliot Anderson cancelled out Harvey Barnes' opener. "That's been clear with some of the decisions I've made. We want to see how some players are going to grow into the team. I thought Jacob Ramsey was magnificent when he came on—he really made a big difference, as did Harvey. It was great to see."

In the world of football, where every match can feel like a must-win, Howe's willingness to prioritise long-term development over short-term results is a bold statement. For fans and fantasy managers alike, it's a reminder that sometimes, the biggest moves happen off the pitch—and on the bench.
