In a thrilling Premier League clash that had fans on the edge of their seats, Manchester United secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool earlier this month. The match, however, wasn't without its fair share of controversy, centering around a goal from Benjamin Sesko that left Liverpool supporters fuming.

The moment of contention came when Sesko bundled the ball into the net after a deflection off Freddie Woodman, following a headed pass from Bruno Fernandes. With the ball ricocheting off Woodman and into the path of Sesko, the question on everyone's mind was whether it had struck his hand on the way in. A VAR review ensued, but to the dismay of Liverpool fans, the goal was ultimately allowed to stand.

Now, Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer, has stepped forward to provide clarity on the decision. Appearing on the latest episode of Match Officials Mic'd Up, Webb addressed the controversy head-on. "The clip speaks for itself. I think it probably does hit the hand," Webb admitted. "But of course, the VAR need that conclusivity. They need to be absolutely certain that it does. It doesn't matter what we think, it's what they think. We do ask them to be sure that something needs acting on."

For context, this wasn't just any ordinary derby. The stakes were sky-high, with both teams vying for a coveted spot in the Champions League. United started the match like a house on fire, racing to a 2-0 lead thanks to a deflected strike from Matheus Cunha and Sesko's controversial tap-in. However, Liverpool roared back in the second half, leveling the score through goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo.

Just when it seemed the match might end in a stalemate, Kobbie Mainoo stepped up to steal the spotlight. The young midfielder, fresh off signing a new contract, delivered a match-winning strike that sent Old Trafford into delirium. For Liverpool fans, though, the bitter taste of Sesko's goal lingered, a decision that Webb's explanation has done little to soothe.
